Woman with 70 pounds of pot at Boston airport charged with drug trafficking: prosecutor

A 19-year-old woman from London who was found with 70 pounds of marijuana at an airport in Boston was arrested on drug trafficking charges, according to prosecutors.

District Attorney Kevin Hayden on Tuesday said Fareedat Folunsho was held on $1,500 bail. He said she also had to surrender her passport.

In a news release, Hayden said U.S. Customs and Border agents seized the marijuana Sunday night at Logan Airport before Folunsho's scheduled flight to the United Kingdom.

He also said Folunsho is the second person who has recently tried to fly to the U.K. out of Logan with more than 50 pounds of pot. He said a Michigan woman was arrested and charged with trafficking marijuana last month after U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents seized two big suitcases stuffed with 74 pounds of marijuana.

These two arrests in a fairly short time span should make it quite clear to anyone else trying to fly marijuana to the U.K. through Boston that it’s not a good idea, to say the least," Hayden said. "It didn’t work for these two women and it’s not likely to work for anyone else either."

Marijuana is illegal in the United Kingdom, where it has an illicit-market street value of about $5,000 per pound, according to Hayden.

Folunsho is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on May 21.
